Clinic Korean Cheat Sheet

Useful Korean words and questions that help you slow the conversation down—without pretending a phrase list can replace proper interpretation.

Quick take

A few Korean phrases can help you identify roles, ask for written information and slow a conversation down. They cannot replace qualified interpretation, understandable consent or answers from the responsible professional.

Use this sheet as a bridge. Show the Korean question, listen for the answer and ask for suitable interpretation when the meaning affects risk, consent, medication, anesthesia, follow-up or an urgent concern.

Start with the useful distinctions

상담 means consultation. 시술 is commonly used for a procedure, often non-surgical, while 수술 means surgery. Context still matters: a short word on a menu does not tell you the technique, risk, professional role or consent process.

마취 means anesthesia and 진정 means sedation. Avoid relying on a casual translated phrase such as “sleep anesthesia.” Ask what exact method is proposed, who is responsible and how you will be monitored.

부작용 often means side effect or adverse effect, while 합병증 means complication. The distinction can change depending on context. Ask the qualified professional to explain the expected effects, important risks and warning signs in language you understand.

Identify the responsible people

담당 의사는 누구인가요? asks, “Who is the doctor in charge?” 실제 시술은 누가 하나요? asks, “Who actually performs the procedure?” These are simple questions with important answers.

If different people assess, perform, anesthetize or provide follow-up, write down their names and roles. A translator or coordinator can help communication, but clinical answers should remain attributable to the appropriate professional.

For a specialist title, 전문의 means medical specialist. The word alone does not establish experience with every aesthetic procedure, so ask about the relevant field and the person's role in the proposed plan.

Ask what the price includes

총 비용에 무엇이 포함되나요? means, “What is included in the total cost?” 별도 비용이 있나요? means, “Are there additional charges?” Use both. A total without inclusions and exclusions is not yet a useful comparison.

취소·환불 규정을 서면으로 받을 수 있나요? asks whether the cancellation and refund policy is available in writing. This does not create a universal right to a particular refund; it helps place the actual terms in front of you before payment.

If the plan may change after assessment, ask 계획이 바뀌면 비용도 바뀌나요?—“If the plan changes, does the cost change too?” Request the updated answer in writing.

Slow down consent and aftercare

천천히 설명해 주세요 means, “Please explain slowly.” 통역이 필요합니다 means, “I need an interpreter.” 이해하지 못했습니다 means, “I did not understand.” These phrases are not rude; they protect the quality of the conversation.

부작용과 합병증을 설명해 주세요 asks for side effects and complications to be explained. 다른 방법도 있나요? asks whether there are alternatives. 회복 기간과 사후 관리에 대해 알려 주세요 asks about the recovery period and aftercare.

서면 안내를 받을 수 있나요? asks for written instructions. Add 제가 이해하는 언어로 받을 수 있나요?—“Can I receive them in a language I understand?” A translated summary should not quietly remove cautions that appear in the original.

Know when the phrase sheet ends

A bilingual line can start a question but cannot confirm that the answer was accurate, complete or understood. For decisions involving diagnosis, candidacy, anesthesia, meaningful risk or consent, arrange interpretation appropriate to the conversation.

For urgent concerns, show your written aftercare and contact the provider or emergency services as instructed. 증상이 빠르게 악화되고 있어요 means, “The symptoms are getting worse quickly,” but a phrase is not an assessment. Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms need qualified attention.

In Korea, 112 is police and 119 is fire and ambulance. Save official numbers before the trip and recheck current visitor information near departure. KareSeoul Direct is not an emergency channel.

Save these before the appointment

Keep the Korean and your preferred-language version together:

The clinic's formal Korean name, branch, address and telephone number.
The names and roles of the people assessing and performing each step.
Questions about exact procedure, anesthesia, risks, alternatives and aftercare.
Questions about total cost, separate charges and written cancellation terms.
A request for suitable interpretation and written instructions you understand.
The provider's follow-up number plus current official emergency contacts.

Bottom line

Use Korean phrases to slow the conversation down—not to rush yourself through a conversation that still is not clear.
